When  Life  of  Pi  was  published,  most  readers  regard  it  as  a  legendary  adventure novel, and are excited about the cliff-hanging floating of Pi. But it is obvious that Martel does  not  want  to  let  this  novel  just  be  a  legendary  adventure  novel,  and  this  is  the intension  of  the last 30 pages  of  this novel,  by  which  Martel  changes the trend  of  whole novel  in  very  short  length.  It  can  be  seen  how  important  the  third  part  Benito  Juarez Infirmary, Tomatlan, Mexico is. This part overturns the beautiful fairy tale that is built by preceding 300 pages.  It also expresses the  discussion about human nature.  Based  on the human  nature and ethical  view,  this thesis makes the  conclusion  that there  is the idea  of environmental ethics in this novel. First  of  all,  this  thesis  sorts  out  the  metaphors  in  this  novel.  The  author  believes there  are  three  levels  of  metaphors.  The  first  level  of  metaphor  between  human  and animals  is  more  palpable.  Zebra  is  sailor,  hyena  is  cook,  orangutan  is  mother,  and Richard  Parker  is  Pi.  The  reason  that  Pi  manufactures  a  beautiful  fairy  tale  by  applying the animals to represent  human is that he  wants  to  cover up a reality  – he  kills and  eats people during the castaway, even eats his mother‘s body. This is exactly what the second level of metaphor wants to express. In order to survive, Pi eats his mother.
