With its distinctive characteristic of non-sequence,non-liquidity in the unfolding ofthe plots,fragmentation is claimed as“the main structural technique of the narratives ofthe novel”(Rabkin,1977).Spatiality of the plot refers to the spatial effects fragmentationcreates:

Perhaps we can clear up some of the mystery by applying ourmethod of reflexive reference,instead of approaching the book,as most of itsreaders have done,expecting to find a coherent temporal pattern of narrative.(Frank,1945:438)

Therefore,spatial connections can be made between fragments,and they can berearranged into a sensible narrative in chronological order.In Enemies,a Love Story,thespatiality of it is embodied in the following two aspects.For one thing,the narrationunfolds repetitively between the past experiences during the Holocaust and the currentlife in America,leaving only fragmented sections.In this way,several completestorylines can be sorted out through the reflexive reference of those fragments.Besides,the fantasies developed by Jewish survivors are interwoven into the reality of theircurrent life in America,disintegrating the narration into fragments.After comprehensivereading,they can be reorganized into several logical narratives with causal relations,achieving spatiality.For another,past quotations from the Holy Bible and the abundantdepiction of Jewish survivors'psychological space are also inserted into the narrationabout current life in America,of which the former blur the timeline while the lattercreates a sense of time pausing,magnifying the sense of space.

2.Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition refers to a literary technique that juxtaposes different narrativeelements including scenes,events,images and narrative perspectives to achieve theartistic effect of correspondence,contrast and metaphor.

And these chapters are knit together,not by the progress of any action?either physical action,or,as in a stream-of-consciousness novel,the actof thinking?but by the continual reference and cross-reference of imagesand symbols which must be referred to each other spatially throughoutthe time-act of reading.(Frank,1945:439)

Based on the above arguments,the spatiality of it lies in that spatial connections canbe made between those seemingly unrelated elements through their cross-reference.Inthis way,it causes the change of narrative perspectives switching from objectivenarration by writers to subjective performance by characters,and a fictional spacesaturated in emotions is formed,achieving the spatial effects(An,2021).

In the following parts,four different juxtapositions in the novel will be analyzed.Specifically,the images representing the same motif are juxtaposed accumulatively toembolden some specific connotations,achieving consistency.The juxtaposition betweencontrastive images represents the contradictoriness of characters,achieving the effect ofcontrast.Besides,similar scenes are juxtaposed together to achieve the effect of metaphorwhile different narrative perspectives are juxtaposed alternately.
