Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 An Introduction to Alice Sebold and The Lovely Bones

Alice Sebold published The Lovely Bones in 2002,she began to be known to thepublic.The Lovely Bones was on The New York Times Best Seller list and was adapted into afilm by the same name in 2009.

1.1.1 An Introduction to Alice Sebold

In 2002,Alice published her novel The Lovely Bones.Once the novel was published,ittopped the list for several weeks and won wide acclaim.It has been translated into multiplelanguages,such as French,Japanese,Chinese and so on.Alice Sebold was born on September 6,1963,in Madison and was grew up in the suburbsof Philadelphia.

Alice's mother was a journalist for a local newspaper,and her father was aSpanish professor at the University of Pennsylvania.Alice also has another older sister.In theyear of 1980,Alice graduated from Great Valley High School in Malvern,Pennsylvania.Sheattended Syracuse University after finishing from high school.

When Alice was 18 years old,a very terrible thing happened,which changed her lifedramatically.During her first semester at Syracuse,Alice was attacked on her way back to herdorm by a rapist,who then took her to a tunnel in the park,where Alice struggled but wasbadly beaten.Then the rapist raped her.After the rapist hurt Alice,Alice managed to return tothe dormitory and then went to the local hospital.Alice went to the police station to tell thetruth,but the rapist was not arrested immediately due to a lack of critical evidence.Apoliceman later told her was lucky as a few months earlier,another girl had been murdered inthe same tunnel.After this incident,Alice returned home to Pennsylvania to live with herfamily.

1.2 Literature Review

Alice Sebold's novel describes the story from two different perspectives:heaven andearth,increasing the three-dimensionality of the novel and enriching the characters'personalities.This chapter is divided into two parts,mainly introducing the domestic andforeign research overview of the works in recent years.It laid a solid foundation for thefollowing thesis writing.

1.2.1 Study Abroad

Foreign studies are mainly conducted from the perspectives of trauma,psychoanalysisand feminism.Alice Sebold in 1999 published her autobiographical novel,Lucky,in whichshe shows Alice's real experience of being raped as a victim.Some scholars put Lucky andThe Lovely Bones together to compare the similarities between the two novels.
