Booth in 1961. The concept has been studied by many narratologists, including Booth, Genette, Chatman, Rimmon-Kenan, Lanser, Hansen, Nünning, Kindt and Müller, Richardson, Shen, and Phelan, etc., who developed their propositions on how to interpret the term and identify the unreliable narrator in the literary narrative. 

Chapter Five   Conclusion

This thesis conducts a close analysis of representations of trauma narrative in Oryx and Crake, with an aim of developing a theoretical framework for examining the impact of narrative techniques on the portrayal of traumas. Specifically, the thesis examines the ways in which fragmented narratives, double time schemes, Nachträglichkeit, first-person narration, and descriptive narration intersect to depict the multiple traumas experienced by the characters. By analysing the role of narrative strategies in trauma presentation, the thesis seeks to shed light on the ways in which trauma is represented and understood in literature and other forms of media. 

From this analysis, it is possible to conclude that narratology is essential for working through and bearing witness to the trauma depicted in literary works. It is a prime example of a narrative that strives to develop a more effective means of representing trauma, as it explores themes related to trauma and narrative structure both thematically and formally. This approach helps to create a more impactful and meaningful story that resonates with readers and provides a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding trauma. 

The story follows a clear trajectory in which the protagonist is depicted as traumatised and resorts to distorting and fragmenting his experiences to evade his pain. However, as the story progresses, he is presented with a means to make sense of and confront his traumas, as well as those of other characters. This is achieved through the breakdown of binary oppositions, such as masculinity/femininity, self/other, and past/present, leading to a more deconstructed perception of the fictional world. By dissolving these distinctions, the protagonist gains a new perspective that allows him to bear witness to the traumas that previously haunted him.
