Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Margaret Atwood and Oryx and Crake

英语语言学论文题目怎么写

Margaret Atwood is one of the most prestigious contemporary Canadian writers. Born in Ottawa, Canada in 1939, Atwood attended Victoria College at the University of Toronto. She published stories and poems in the college literary journal from 1957 to 1961. After graduating with an honours degree in English, Atwood won a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to Radcliffe College, which later became part of Harvard University. She obtained a Master’s degree and continued her doctoral studies at Harvard University. In 1966, Atwood’s first poetry collection, The Circle Game, was published and won her the Governor General’s Award for poetry (1967). In 1969, when she taught creative writing at the University of Alberta, The Edible Woman was published. Later, she published many literary works, including collections of fiction, nonfiction books, poetry collections, dystopias, children’s stories and graphic novels, such as Life Before Man (1979), Bodies Harm (1981), The Handmaid’s Tale (1985), Cat’s Eye (1988), Wilderness Tips (1991), Good Bones (1992), The Robber Bride (1993), Alias Grace (1996), The Blind Assassin (2000), Negotiating with the Dead: A Writer on Writing (2002), Oryx and Crake (2003), The Year of the Flood (2009), MaddAddam (2013), The Complete Angel Catbird (2018) and Dearly (2020). Atwood’s oeuvre exhibits a remarkable generic multiplicity, indicative of her unflagging creative dynamism, penchant for experimentation, and sustained engagement with cultural and political transformation.

Atwood’s influence transcends both national and disciplinary boundaries. Since the 1970s, she has paid attention to the impact of American culture on Canada and has played a pivotal role in promoting the independent development of Canadian culture. Canada acts as the contextual framework in which Atwood composes and articulates her literary works. While her oeuvre is profoundly grounded in her Canadian background, its overarching themes and subjects have acquired a universal significance. Her Canadianness and international appeal are the two themes explored in her literary works. Her unique perspective, shaped by her position as a woman and her broad worldview, affords a multifaceted view of her home territory that extends far beyond its borders.

1.2 Literature Review

In 1977, The Malahat Review published the first collection of critical reviews on Margaret Atwood, titled “Margaret Atwood: A Symposium”. Since then, her works have been analysed extensively by critics, leading to a well-established academic criticism for Atwood. In addition, interviews, articles, and reviews complement these analyses. Notably, foreign scholars have devised conjectural hypotheses regarding Atwood’s literary output, which can be categorised into three main perspectives.

The first perspective is feminist criticism, which delves into the themes of feminism and sexual politics presented within Atwood’s literary works. Through a feminist lens, Atwood’s works are analysed in order to uncover and critique the gendered power dynamics that pervade her narratives. This critical approach is grounded in a thorough understanding of feminist theory and is utilised to illumina论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
