Over the past 40 years of Reform and Opening up, China has significantly reduced the number of poor people through deepening reforms and large-scale poverty alleviation and development, making China the first developing country in the world to achieve the poverty reduction target of the UN Millennium Development Goals. As a result, domestic and foreign media have widely reported on China’s poverty alleviation achievements, introducing detailed news and information on poverty alleviation work, publicizing poverty alleviation policies, and summarizing and reporting on advanced models and experiences and practices in poverty alleviation work. To promote the international dissemination of China’s poverty alleviation stories, scholars analyzed news reports about China’s poverty alleviation from different aspects at home and abroad. In this study, news reports about China’s poverty alleviation will be reviewed from the perspectives of communication and discourse analysis.

2.1.1 Studies on News Reports about China’s Poverty Alleviation from the Perspective of Communication

Research on news reports about China’s poverty alleviation was mainly conducted from the perspective of communication. Scholars mainly focused on the writing style and topic of certain news media. Some researchers analyzed the stylistic characteristics of People’s Daily’s coverage related to target poverty alleviation (Wei & Chen, 2020; Liu & Gao, 2018). Deng (2020) took China Global Television Network (CGTN) as an example and found that CGTN strives to adapt to foreign readers’ reading habits, providing some suggestions for media communication for poverty alleviation news reports. Taking Anhui Daily as an example, Wu (2021) analyzed its experience of integrated full-media editing and multimedia platforms to introduce poverty eradication stories, finding that Anhui Daily adopts the way of “talking about the family” to tell the front-line poverty-eradication stories and presents the vivid stories of poverty eradication with the help of all-media platform.

2.2 Previous Studies on Transitivity Analysis of News Reports

This section will also review the discourse analysis of transitivity in three types of ideologically distinctive reports: political, economic, and social reports, to find the applicability and distribution of transitivity analysis in news reports.

2.2.1 Studies on Transitivity Analysis of Political News Reports

The transitivity system can be used as a discourse analysis tool to explore how language constructs an image based on dominant social subjects, categorization, and characterization (Fairclough, 1992; Peter, 2008). And transitivity analysis of political news reports focuses on analyzing the causes of the association between political events and ideology. Li (2010) analyzed the New York Times and China Daily news reports on the US-led NATO bombing of the Chinese embassy in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in a comparative manner with the help of the transitivity system, revealing their ideological orientations.
