本文是一篇英语语言学论文题目,本研究对《中国日报》2012年至2022年十年间有关脱贫新闻报道进行详尽分析,深入探究《中国日报》脱贫报道的及物性话语资源所表征的政府形象、企业形象以及民众形象三者之间的互动关系,进而探讨了脱贫报道所表征的中国国家形象特点和影响因素。
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Since the 18th Party Congress was held in China on November 8, 2012, the Party Central Committee has attached great importance to poverty alleviation, placing it in a prominent position in the governance of the country. By 2021, China has led 700 million farmers out of poverty and built a moderately prosperous society, historically solving the problem of absolute poverty and achieving a comprehensive victory in the fight against poverty. In 2022, the results of poverty alleviation were further consolidated and expanded, holding the bottom line of not returning to poverty on a large scale, and the national per capita net income of the population out of poverty reached 14,342 yuan and increased by 14.3% year-on-year. China’s experience in poverty alleviation has provided the world with Chinese experience and Chinese solutions for poverty alleviation, and a relentless and cohesive national image of China was shaped by this practical achievement. And Chinese now have the strength and the need to tell the Chinese story well to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
However, there is a discrepancy between the current self-identified image of China and the internationally perceived image of China, as well as a severe mismatch between China’s image and its comprehensive national power (Huan & Guan, 2022). Although the story of China’s poverty alleviation, as one of the powerful stories of China in the new era, has been disseminated internationally, the objectivity of foreign official media’s coverage of poverty alleviation in China still needs to be fairer. And the external construction of China’s national image needs to be emphasized to enhance China’s cultural self-confidence and cultural cohesion and then improve China’s international discourse power.
1.2 Research Purposes
From the linguistic perspective, the discursive strategies of national media coverage can be analyzed to expand coverage influence. And transitivity discourse resources play a pivotal role in figuring out the actual information and views behind the media. With the help of the transitivity system, it is possible to explore the social, cultural, ideological, and political factors that determine the choice of process types in particular types of discourse (Mayr, 2008:18).
Therefore, this study selects 105 reports from China Daily from November 8, 2012, to May 8, 2022, on the theme of poverty alleviation in China Daily. Based on the transitivity system and national image, this study constructs a research framework to analyze the transitivity discourse resources representing China’s national image in news reports about China’s poverty alleviation. The following objectives will be achieved.
(1) To analyze the transitivity discourse resources in news reports on poverty alleviation in China Daily.
(2) To demystify how the transitivity discourse resources of China Daily’s poverty alleviation reports construct China’s national image.
(3) To explain social factors contributing to China’s national image construction.
