6.1 Major Findings

This study conducted an exhaustive analysis of the application and distribution of transitivity discourse resources in China Daily’s poverty alleviation reports over ten years. The research shows that the material process, verbal process, and relational process are the top three process types in the three-dimensional image construction of government, enterprises, and people. The participants of people image appear most frequently, much more frequently than those of government image and enterprise image. The different types of processes, participants, and circumstances in the three-dimensional image construction of the government, enterprises and people are interrelated, interactive and intertwined, highlighting the fact that the three main subjects of poverty alleviation. And the government, enterprises and people have their duties and cooperate with each other, vividly reproducing the image of the government that takes the overall situation and coordinates all parties, the image of the enterprises that take social responsibility and the image of the people that work hard to get rich. The three-dimensional images then converge to form unrelenting China’s national image. 

For the construction of the government image, China Daily regards government agencies, cities, districts, and counties as government participants, with the regional scope ranging from first-tier cities to remote cities. And the circumstances include people’s living areas or enterprises’ operations, fully reflecting the extensive nature of China’s poverty alleviation work and the mutual assistance among cities. China Daily presents the government’s poverty alleviation initiatives through the material process  and the dialogue between the government, enterprises, and people through the verbal process, highlighting the government’s attention to helping enterprises and its concern for people’s well-being. In addition, the relational and existential processes directly show the meaning and guidance of poverty alleviation policies and objectively introduce the specific contents of the government’s poverty alleviation work. At the same time, with the help of the mental process and behavioral process, it shows the image of government leaders who are happy with people’s happiness and closely connected with people and enterprises.
