摘要:Of the five skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, listening, as aninput, is a main means to gain information. With listening comprehension brought intoEnglish examinations at both high school and university levels, listening comprehensiondifficulties are increasingly attracted attention by parents, students, teachers and researchers.
1.2 Purposes and significance of the listening comprehension study
The research on listening comprehension difficulty has paid great attention in recentyears since the shift from “how to teach” to “how to learn” in language teaching. During theprocess of English learning, nearly all the students, especially non-English major students,have difficulty on listening comprehension in China. And some students even have seldomhad any English listening exercises before enrolling university. Others may have had dosome related exercises, but it still has a long way to go. It is difficult for students of differentlevels to improve their English listening comprehension abilities. Without listening, Englishmay become a “deaf” language when communicating with others. And a lot of obstacles maybe met in some situations, such as a lecture spoken in English. Students can hardlyunderstand the main content of the lecture, let alone ask some questions which they areinterested and puzzled. Listening comprehension competence plays an indispensable role instudents’ knowledge learning, it is no longer just an English listening ability, and it is a toolfor students of different levels, especially non-English majors, to learn what they want tolearn in a broadened horizon. To be honest, students of different levels are willing to find outthe ways to solve various difficulties met in listening comprehension. Many factors mayinfluence listening comprehension, such as the relatively difficult material, the speaker’saccent which is not familiar to second language learners.As we all know that the traditional methodologies used in teaching English of Chinesestudents can be considered as “deaf” and “blind”. To a certain extent, the “deaf” and “blind”are mainly considered from the perspective of listening and speaking competence. Becausewhen referring to English test in the past, grammar, reading comprehension and writing areincluded in it except listening. With the development of the world, English has become theofficial language in various important situations. Gradually, listening comprehension hasbeen paid attention by both academic researchers and educators. And difficulty on listeningcomprehension is the key point in listening comprehension competence.This study will focus on a questionnaire over 102 students of different levels including34 students from Chang’an Senior High School in Tai Yuan, 35 college students and 33postgraduate students in North University of China under the theory of Anderson’sthree-phase model of listening comprehension.
