3.2.2 Technicality
In science and technology field, kinds of new conception and new phenomenon are constantly discovered. To name these new things in an appropriate way displays the technicality of nominalization. Nominalization can nominalize the process and phenomenon and turn them into metaphorical expressions. In this way, nominalization transformed the complicated process, phenomenon and character into thing capable of being named. Nominalization makes it possible to construct hierarchies of technical terms (Halliday in his An Introduction to Functional Grammar). Therefore, nominalization is an important way to name the new things appearing in EST and symbolizes the technical style of EST. For example:
1)      Electrode potential depends on the concentration of ions.(chemical conception)
   电极用位取决于离子浓度。
2)      The determination of trace concentration of mercury in minerals is described.
文章论述矿物中痕量汞的含量。
3)  A concentration process is important now that the depletion of high grade is
possibility. (metallurgical conception)
      由于目前高品位的矿石可能用完，富集过程是重要的。
4)      Concentration can be processed to reduce cost.(chemical engineering conception)
可以加工成浓缩剂以降低成本。
   In above sentences, the same word “concentration” is used to name for the conceptions and things of four academic fields and exhibits powerful naming capability. Also the nominalization can be used to name new conception, such as feasibility可行性, accuracy精确度, frequency频率, reliability可靠性, intensity强度, and so on.
   Some technical terms in different fields are formed through the compounds based on the nominalization heads or noun collocation based on the nominalization modifier, such as:
   maglev(= magnetic levitation) 磁悬浮列车
   comsat(= communication satellite) 通讯卫星
   laser (= light amplification stimulated by emission of radiation) 激光
   high frequency force balance (HFFB)
   Therefore, the wide use of nominalization in EST provides linguistic methods for naming and classifying the new technical terms. Meanwhile, this kind of nominalization is concise in forms but also stresses the technical style of EST.
