“the Good Shepherd” that suggest objects whose symbolic meanings are commonly known. There are some examples of Common Literary, the symbolic meaning of sunshine is hope, cross is salvation, heart is love, grim is reaper or death and phoenix is rebirth.

2.2 An exposition of symbolism象征意义的博览会
It is defined that symbolism as the art of expressing thoughts and feelings not by describing them directly, nor by defining them through comparisons with concrete images, but by expressing what these thoughts and feelings are, by re-creating them in the mind of the reader through the use of unexplained symbols.
According to Charles Chadwick, we can know that symbolism involves two aspects. One kind is called “human symbolism” and the other is called as “transcendental Symbolism”. Edmund Wilson defines human symbolism as “an attempt by carefully studied means—a complicated association of ideas represented by a medley of metaphors—to communicate unique personal feelings”(Chadwick, 67). As for the transcendental symbolism “in which intricate images are used as symbols, not of particular thoughts and feelings within the poet, but of a vast and general ideal world of which the real world is merely an imperfect representation” (Chadwick, 3).
To symbolism in literature, the period since the World War I has been an outstanding age. The symbol systems are applied by many chief writers of this period partly came from mostly forgotten religious and mysterious traditions and partly developed by the authors themselves. The symbolic applications in some of the most famous works are present everywhere: in their title, in their settings, their characters, their language, and their culture.
Symbolism in literature is one of the many tools that writers employ in order to generate not only interest in one's work but also to create another level of meaning. Symbolism may be obvious or more subtle or hidden so that the reader must really think and study the work to grasp the author's true meaning. Like the work The Scarlet Letter, where the scarlet letter "A" pinned to Hester Prynne's breast represents adultery. The scarlet letter also has other, more subtle meanings.
Writers may also use symbolism to allude to a mood or feeling without coming out and stating that particular emotion. For example, a writer might use the symbol of a lily to represent purity or a ray of sunshine to represent hope. Roses and images of hearts have become synonymous with love.
The Symbolist revolutions’ accomplishment was that, most basically, an exact consciousness of language was brought. Language was regarded as a substance having its own rules and its own queer forms of life rather than a natural appearance of the person (Scott 212). According to Friedman, because of the influence of French Symbolist poetry, a new kind of novel—the Symbolist novel came into being.
In some respects, the novels of James, Proust, Joyce, Conrad, Faulkner and Virginia Woolf are this kind, which continue from French Symbolist poetry.)Even though the symbolist novel is one of the distinguished forms of the twentieth century, it has achieved less attention than studies of symbolist poets and of symbolist poetry. E.M. Forster and E.K. Brown have looked over features of the symbolist novel (Tindall 71). Through the use of symbolism in A Room with A View to reveal how the author 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
