Descriptive research design was adopted in this case. The researcher visited the population of interest. The respondents were asked to state the factors that impact on the performance of their respective SACCOs i.e. REMSA SACCO, KEN-KNIT SACCO, ELDORET MUNICIPAL STAFF SACCO AND BONDE LA KERIO SACCO. Respondents were contacted in their usual working place allowing them to respond more freely to the questions.

3.2 Study Design

Descriptive study design was used. Descriptive study designs are concerned with describing the characteristics of a particular individual, or of a group. Descriptive research is therefore concerned with specific predictions, with narration of facts and characteristics concerned with individuals, group or situations. The advantage of the design is that it allows it to be flexible in data collection and also makes use of open ended and closed questions which would allow the respondent to give extra information freely. It is also appropriate because respondents would not be manipulated.

According to Kothari (2005) descriptive research design includes surveys and fact finding enquiries of different kinds. The major purpose of descriptive research is description of the state of affairs as they exist at present. In descriptive studies the researcher must be able to define clearly, what \he wants to measure and must find adequate measures of finding it along with a clear cut definition of 'population' he wants to study. The designs in such studies must be rigid and not flexible and must focus attention on the following: formulating the objective of the study, designing the methods of data collection, selecting the sample, collecting the data, processing and analyzing the data and reporting the findings.

3.3 Target Population

The population of interest was the management committee members, staff and general members of saccos in Eldoret town, Uasin-Gishu District. These SACCOs include

Although the total population is 2414, the researcher targeted only 3 management committee members, 2 staff and 10 members from each of the four sectors.

3.4 Sample Design

From the above target population of sixty, a complete census was done. Kothari ( 2005) indicates that when all members of a target population are considered, it becomes more representative of the population of interest. It fulfils the requirements of efficiency, representatives, reliability of finance for the study and other factors like nature of units, size of the population, size of the questionnaire and the time available for completion of the study and availability of trained investigators.

3.5 Data collection procedures/ Instruments
