Objectives

At the end of this module students should have an understanding of:

- technological and material factors shaping the digital economy
- the new multimedia digital environment
- business developments associated with the digital era
- diverse knowledge processes in the digital environment

Teaching
The course is taught on a multi-media basis drawing on academic literature, documentary film and other media, including Internet, sources. The pattern of teaching will vary each week with tutor and students taking the lead in presenting material. It is essential for all students to prepare in advance for the seminars by reading relevant material and thinking through issues and points to raise in group discussion.

Introduction
In today's world, the history of mankind is changing rapidly, extensively and profoundly. Advanced and new technologies represented by information technology and information industry develop fast. The competition of the comprehensive national strength represented by the information technologies and industries is becoming increasingly fierce (Agnew, J. and Corbridge, S., 2005). The influence of information on economic development and social progress is becoming more and more profound, causing widespread concerns all over the world. One of the most important outcomes of this development is digitalization as well as the digital economy trend along with it. Both developed and developing countries attach great importance to the development of digital economy, regarding it as a strategic task. The digitization is one of the obvious characteristics in the human society of the new century. It not only brought the revolutions and innovations to our notions but also brought the great changes to our ways of living and working(Barney, D., 2004). At the same time, the development of internet which is the representative of digitization era has exerted great influence on the economic development and globalization process. In recent years, the new economic system which is represented by internet economy is walking towards the international economic platform, meanwhile, the globalization and economy has entered a fresh e-business era which is known as the digital economy(Cooper, R. N. and Layard, R. (eds) , 2003). Digital economy refers to an economic system, in this system, digital technology has been widely used and thus bring the entire economic environment and the fundamental changes in economic activity (Dicken, P., 2007).
