摘要:Reading is generally viewed as language in use, and language users should go beyondgrammars and words. They need to explore the inside relationships of how the text is composedand find out how the text is related to the certain context.

According to Requirements for HVTEEnglish Courses Teaching issued by the Education Department,the students of High VocationalTechnical College are supposed to develop the reading skills,and the content of practical readingis enlarged.Most students fail to reach the goal of reading efficiency under the situation in whichthey are taught in a traditional way—explaining new words,difficult language points,sentencestructure and grammar. They only get the broken information. The traditional method ignores thefact that reading is a communicative activity, it is dynamic rather than static,it is active ratherthan passive, the real purpose of reading is to obtain information and the real purpose ofreading teaching is to improve the students reading ability.The traditional teaching of readingbased on grammar-translation views the EFT reading as a passive decoding process,in whichnew words,phrases and sentence patterns are taken as the crucial language points and dwell onby the teachers. Whereas in the discourse analysis-based teaching,discourse is viewed as adynamic process instead of a static one,it stresses the contribution of context.So by discourseanalysis—based reading teaching the teachers can better make the students live up to theRequirements for HVTE English Courses Teaching. Therefore, in this
thesis the authorintroduces Professor Martin and Dr Li Xianjin's 5Cs Model, attaching great importance ofdiscourse analysis in the interpretation of a text and demonstrates how the teachers can helpstudents improve their reading competence by improving the teaching based on 5CsModel. We can get the following major findings from the analyses of the study data :
Firstly, traditional reading teaching method ignores the fact that reading is acommunicative activity, and the real purpose of reading teaching is to improve the studentsreading ability. The students' class initiative is relatively low. Through the class observation ofEC, the author finds that the students are willing to take part in various language activities of 5CsModel, and their enthusiasm is much higher than before. Therefore, students' learning interestcan be relatively fostered and developed through 5Cs Model.
Secondly, through the data analyses of the experiment questionnaire the test results,thisthesis verifies that 5Cs Model can help students improve their reading ability and readingproficiency. The model can help English teachers to guide the learners to develop their discourseskills, to make them learn and use this model to appreciate text in their own reading practice.
Thirdly, to some degree it' helpful to develop the students' critical thinking, however, dueto the High Vocational Colleges students' language level, it's not easy for the teacher to developthe students' skills of critical thinking through 5Cs Model in short time. In the five elements of5Cs Model, the first four :cohesion, coherence, culture and context, can be understood bystudents well, and the students are willing to take an active part in the various languageactivities and even use these elements to appreciate the text in their own reading, however, theeffect of improving their critique thinking is not so obvious.
