He advocated that to explore the connections between the language  forms  and  meaning,  linguists  should  start  from  context.  His  study  pushed linguistics researches a big step forward, but unfortunately, he did not give a clear definition to the language units which are larger than sentences and did not deepen the study. The  1950s  was  the preliminary  stage  of  the  discourse  analysis  theory.  In  1952,  the American linguist Z. Harris published an article with the title “Discourse Analysis”, in which the term “discourse analysis” was first used. Harris (1952) pointed out that language does not exist  in  words  or  sentences  but  in  interconnected  discourse  (Harris,  1952).  He  intended  to explain  the  relationship  between  sentences  by  grammatical  rules,  trying  to  study  the distribution  and  organization  of  language  elements  in  a  discourse.  This  view  broke  the situation where sentences are regarded as the largest units in language study, and emphasized the  study  of  language  as  discourse.  Therefore,  the  article  is  regarded  as  the  origin  of  the modern discourse analysis.

Chapter Five   Data Analysis and Discussion 

After one term’s experiment, data from the students’ test scores and questionnaires were collected and analyzed. In order to more objectively check the results of the experiment, the author used software SPSS 19.0 to analyze the data from the pretest and the post-test. In this chapter,  all  the  data  will  be  described  in  the  form  of  tables  and  related  analysis  will  be presented following each table, and subsequently, discussions will be made about the results and findings of the experiment.
