2.1 Relevant Concepts
2.1.1 Problem Chain
While questions are a common teaching method in our classroom,question chains are ateaching tool derived from classroom questions and a new way of thinking about classroomquestion design.
According to Wang Houxiong(2010),problem chain is a series of purposeful and logicalresearchable questions that teachers purposefully adapt into a series of easy-to-understandproblems that students may encounter in their daily teaching according to their teachingobjectives.The process of solving these problems is not simply a question-and-answer sessionbetween teachers and students,but an active exploration from all perspectives by both sides,which allows students to become organizers and participants of learning and to develop goodqualities of independent and good thinking.
According to Pei Song(2011),problem chain is when the teacher designs the bookknowledge into systematic,hierarchical,and interrelate problems based on the content taught,the design of teaching objectives,and the students’prior cognitive and knowledge levels,thefirst question,the second question,and the third question,they are mutually constrained,interconnected,and go on in sequence,laying down layers and layers,interlocking.
According to Yang Pingping(2018),problem chain is a series of questions that arecentered,sequential,relatively independent and systematic in the process of achieving theteaching objectives of a unit or a lesson,according to the students’existing cognitive leveland in response to their possible doubts and problems in the learning process.
2.2 Theoretical Basis
2.2.1 Constructivist Theory
Constructivist theory was first propose in the early 1960s by the Swiss psychologistPiaget(1966)argue that children gradually construct an understanding of the external worldas they interact with their surroundings.At the heart of constructivism is the idea that learningis a process of active meaning construction and social interaction.Teaching means more thansimply putting knowledge and experience into learners’brains;it also means guiding them togenerate new experiences base on their prior knowledge.Thus,learning is the process ofadjusting our mental models to new experiences(Jacqueline&Martin Brooks,1993).Autonomy in language learning is borrowing from constructivist learning theory,the core ideaof which is that effective learning is“active”learning(Benson,2005),in which studentsinitiate processes such as setting goals and monitoring their own work.In short,students areat the center and take responsibility for their own learning in a constructive way(Benson,1997).The implications of constructivist learning theory for the teaching design of highschool English reading problem chains are:
