摘要:The globalization of English is a time-binding topic. The work done in this paper is conducive to the understanding of this dynamic process, but it is to be conceded that there exist many research limitations in our country.

英语发展过程中因特网及全球化的作用
Introduction
Globalization of languages is the linguistic consequence of a complex process of globalization. The globalization of languages is“a process by which some languages are increasingly being used for international communities and others disappear.”
There are different narratives about the future of dominant languages such as there will be no global language;there will be an oligarchy of global languages which may involve French,English,Spanish,Chinese;English will continue to hold its position as the only global language etc. However, hardly anybody challenges the fact that English has achieved or at least close to the status of a global language if there has to be any.
A glimpse of the following statistics will reveal the fact to some extent: Worldwide, over 1.4 billion people live in countries where English enjoys official status. One fifth of the world population speaks English with varying degrees of competence.Over 70%of the world’s scientists read English.About 85%(75%, according to British Council’s research data)of the world’s mail is written in English. And 80%of all information in the world’s electronic retrieval systems is stored in English.By 2010,the number of people who speak English as a second or foreign language will exceed the number of the native speakers.Such a trend is unprecedented.
Professor David Crystal has nominated a book to this subject English as a Global Language, where he researches into the following three questions:
What makes a world language?
Why is English the leading candidate?
Will it continue to hold that position?
On the question why it is English and not any other languages that has assumed the role of the global language used for cross-national communication, the answer is never as simple as Hindmarsh’s bland optimism that“the world has opted for English, and the world knows what it wants, what will satisfy its needs.”
According to Crystal, rather, history has made its choice based on the cultural, economic, political power of the people who speaks the language. The rise of English has proved it to be true.English was the language of the British Empire that was the most powerful colonialist nation in the 17th century and the 18th century, the most industrialized nation in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the twentieth century,it was the language of the US,the super power after World War II.In the world in which the US takes the leading role in many areas,English has been spreading at an unprecedented speed.US contribution to the global status of English is closely associated with its leading-edge technology particularly computers and information
technology. Our age has been widely referred to as“information age”,“technology age”,“Internet age”or“communication age” .All these terms undoubtedly accentuate the essential role that information and communications technology plays as the driving force behind the advancement of the whole society.
