摘要:This thesis is an attempt to prove the necessity and significance of China English from a cultural perspective through a case study of the novel.

从文化视角看中国英语的意义及其必要性
                  Chapter 1  Introduction
Presumably, the term "China English"(CE) was first put forward by Prof. Ge Chuangui in his article A Talk on Chinese-English Translation(葛传集,1983). Wang Rongpei further defined it as "the English that is used in China and based on the Standard English but characterized with Chinese features" in his article China English is an Objective Reality(汪榕培,1991). In other words, China English is the English with Chinese characteristics and reflects the Chinese unique cultures. For example, Four Books(四书),Five Classics(五经),eight-legged essay(八股文),Hanlinyuan(翰林院)and the four modernizations(四个现代化) are peculiar Chinese teens.
Many scholars have now studied translation from a "cultural" perspective. "Translating across cultures" and "cultural proficiency" have become buzz words in translating (Katan, 2004: 3). In this sense, the Author argues that China English is a kind of cultural translation.
Moment in Peking, originally written in English by Lin Yutang, is a popular novel well known for its showcasing of Chinese culture. Due to the admitted differences between Chinese and Western cultures, some phenomena are unique to the Chinese society. Lie translated a good number of Chinese culture-loaded expressions in China English. Among these expressions, some have no corresponding expressions in English such as阴阳(yin yang),八卦(Bagua or the Eight Triagrams), and the others have. For example,“食启‘”,which was translated into "eat one's word" instead of "break one's promise". Dr. Lie chose the very phase "eat one's word" to achieve the desired effect that is both rich in Chinese culture and not insufficient in English language requirement.
In the course of writing this book, Lin Yutang translated lots of Chinese address forms, idioms, proverbs, culture-specific words, etc. in China English, which is partly  attributed to the great success of the book. For instance, Taitai(太太)stands for the head mistress of the family. Nainai(奶奶)stands for any young married woman in the family. Hsiaochieh(小姐)stands for an unmarried daughter of a high-class family.
For this addressing system, Lin translated the original Chinese terms into English by trying to keep the sound of those original terms, which brings Western readers a sense of foreignness. When the readers read aloud these terms, they would feel like reading a Chinese story.
