Chapter .ne Introduction
    One of the main purposes that we use language is to establish and maintain social relationship with other people, which is considered by functionalists the interpersonal metafimction of language. This is mainly realized through the mood and modality of the sentences in question. Martin argues that interpersonal function of language is not thoroughly studied in Systemic Functional Grammar, and he sets up the Appraisal Theory to develop it. Appraisal is defined by Martin (2000) as: appraisal is concerned with evaluation: the kinds of attitudes that are negotiated in a text, the strength of the feelings involved and the ways in which values are sourced and readers aligned. The Appraisal Theory consists of three subsystems: attitude, graduation and engagement. Attitude deals with feelings, judgment of behaviors and evaluation of things; graduation refers to the gradability of attitudinal meanings; engagement is concerned with the source of the attitude in a text.

In this thesis, terms of appraisal and evaluation are used interchangeably to refer to the same phenomenon of expressing attitudes, stances and beliefs as Bednarek (2006) has proposed that appraisal is used in a similar way to evaluation. In this thesis, the author makes an attempt to expand Martin's Appraisal Theory and proposes a new model by combining Appraisal Theory with Adaptation Theory and Speech Acts Theory, and applies it to the analysis of attitudinal meanings in political speeches.

    This  chapter is  to introduce the  objectives  of this thesis,  relating to  the methodology and data adopted in the analysis, and it also outlines the organization of this thesis.
1 .1 .bjectives of the Present Study
The main objective of this thesis is first to investigate the distinctive evaluative features of the genre of political speeches. A thorough evaluation study of political speeches by George W. Bush on Iraqi war is to be conducted, which can be regarded as a contribution to the application of the appraisal study on political discourses. In the thesis, the author intends to explore how those attitudinal resources in Appraisal Theory are particularly placed to achieve the communicative purpose of this specific genre, to study how language is employed to express writer's or speaker's attitude, stance and beliefs on people, events, text/process, and phenomena, and to identify the illocutionary force and perlocutionary act performed in the evaluative utterances of political speeches.
