,Horwitz, Aida, and Jane Arnold and Brown. According to Arnold, anxietyserves as the greatest affective impediment of language acquisition. Horwitz et al definedforeign language anxiety as "a distinct complex of self-perceptions, beliefs, feelings, andbehaviors related to classroom language learning arising from the uniqueness of thelanguage learning process,, (Horwitz et al, 1986).Foreign language anxiety, treated as one of the most pivotal affective variables, hasbeen found in many studies to have negative effects on students' ability in learning aforeign language. However, the effects of anxiety are still controversial. Although moststudies focus on the debilitating side of anxiety (Arnold,2000; Gardner & Maclntyre,1993a; Horwitz, 2001; Maclntyre & Gardner, 1991a; Young, 1991a), some languageresearchers assert the positive mode of anxiety (Chastain, 1975; Kleinmann, 1977). Thus, more research efforts need to be devoted to the realm of language anxiety.

2. Literature Review

2.1 Anxiety
The term of anxiety has been understood from numerous perspectives by scholars invarious fields of research, such as anthropology and psychology: Darwin (1872) thoughtof anxiety as an emotional reaction that is aroused when an organism feels physicallyunder threat. May (1996) considered anxiety as "an emotional response to threat to somevalue that the individual holds essential to his existence as a personality,,. Beck and hisassociates (Beck, 1985; Beck & Emery, 1985) claimed that anxiety is an emotionalresponse originating from a defective perception of danger in the environment. Those are only a few examples of the divergent understandings of the term of anxiety. As the creator of the Theory of Evolution,Darwin stressed the adaptive function ofanxiety, which prepares an individual for coping with the perceived physical threats.Anxiety thus helps one to survive dangerous situations. This notion has its limitationbecause in a civilized society there are still a lot of people complaining about the problemof anxiety though few situations are really physically threatening. The definition by Mayseems to be praiseworthy for explaining the anxiety without physical threat: it is the threatto our value that matters. But it is still incomplete because it neglects the fact that even inmodem society there are still physical threats such as earthquakes or hurricanes whichmay cause anxiety. As a psychotherapist. Beck attributed anxiety to the defectiveperception of an individual, rather than reality. This notion of anxiety is supported by thesuccesses of psychotherapies which have effectively reduced anxiety through helpingclients modify their problematic perceptions. But the definition by Beck is still imperfect. The perception leading to anxiety may not always be defective. Spielberger definesanxiety as "an unpleasant emotional state or condition which is characterized bysubjective feelings of tension, apprehension, and worry, and by activation or arousal of theautomatic nervous systems" (1972).
