1.1 Background of the study

When the conceptof autonomous learning was introduced into the foreign learning teaching by HenriHolec in 1981, it had gained more and more interest from home and abroad. As Little(1991)describes that autonomous learning is the new “buzz-word” in the field ofsecond language acquisition. It has become an unquestionable goal and main part oflanguage learning methods throughout the world. Large amounts of time, energy andmoney are spent on its promotion.Nowadays, with the development of respect for the individual in society andlifelong learning, increasing attention has been drawn to the importance of autonomouslearning in language teaching and learning. In fact autonomy has become a centraltheme in language learning and teaching (Camilleri. 1999). Changes in society haveinfluenced the goals of Education throughout the world. As Crabbe (1993: 443)mentions, society does not have the resources to provide the level of personalinstruction needed by all its members in every area of learning, so learners must beable to provide their own learning needs so that they can act more responsibly inrunning the affairs of the society in which he lives. Autonomous learning seems to bean effective alternative to meet the changing demands of the world. Meanwhile, theeffects of globalization and changes in society have brought about the need of lifelonglearning.Education today must provide the skills necessary for this process. Learning is anindividual process. Learners are all different, their backgrounds and experiences varyand they will consequently encounter new knowledge in different ways. One’s learningability is one of the key factors of one’s sustainable development.
The concept of autonomous learning entered the field of language teaching in theearly 1980s in China. As the concept of lifelong learning has reached every corner ofthe society, more and more educators have realized the importance of autonomouslearning because no one can accompany the learners through their study. What thestudents have learned at the college will rapidly drop out.The creative capacity is one of the most important competences of all the skills. Inthe context of China, the learners’ ability of autonomous learning can be connected with the quality-oriented education. The traditional classroom teaching is facing a bigchallenge and is being replaced by the “learner-centered” one. Learning autonomouslyis of great help for learners to adapt to the quickly changing world and keep up withthe latest development in science and technology.
