摘要:The present paper consists of six chapters, including the introductive chapter whichbriefly describes a general picture of the research background, highlights the significance ofthe present study, and then raises the research questions.
Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Overview: research background
In the past few decades, researchers focusing on ESL learners’ vocabulary developmentas well as second language learners have shown a keen interest in the acquisition of individualwords but paid scant attention to the knowledge of collocation (Grant & Bauer, 2004).Although collocation knowledge has long been neglected, its significance in L2 competenceis above suspicion. The benefits of learning collocations are now seen as extending beyondmere word selection to include fluency development as well as improvements in accuracy(Wray, 2000). With multiple benefits to be gained, many researchers have widely recognizedthe importance of collocation knowledge to second language learners in language use (Bahns& Eldaw, 1993; Lewis, 2000; Nesselhauf, 2003). In recent years, there has been a generalconsensus that collocation is an important aspect of vocabulary knowledge for languagelearners (Nesselhauf, 2003; McCarthy & O’Dell, 2005; Webb & Kagimoto, 2011), and theimportance of collocation learning in the classroom has attracted many researchers to find amore explicit instruction in academic curriculums (Hill, 2000; Kennedy, 2003).Despite widespread recognition of the important role of collocation and its critical position in fluency development (Bahns & Eldaw, 1993; Nesselhaulf, 2003), very fewempirical studies have addressed the issue of how collocations can be most effectively learnedby foreign language learners. Moreover, to my knowledge, previous studies have examinedthe effects of gloss and word-focused activity on vocabulary learning in isolation, in otherwords, few studies have examined or compared their different effects on vocabulary learning, especially on collocation learning.

1.2 Research questions
The present study focuses on the effects of multiple-choice gloss and word-focusedactivity on collocation learning. Therefore, it aims at finding answers to the followingquestions:
Research question 1: Does multiple-choice gloss facilitate collocation gain and retentionrespectively in terms of receptive knowledge and productive knowledge?
Research question 2: Does word-focused activity facilitate collocation gain and retention respectively in terms of receptive knowledge and productive knowledge?
Research question 3: Does word-focused activity generate greater effects on collocationgain and retention than multiple-choice gloss does in terms of receptive knowledge andproductive knowledge, or vice versa?

Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Collocation
Although the concept of collocation has attracted many researchers’ attention in the fieldof SLA, there is no universally accepted formal definition for it (Lewis, 2000; Grant & Bauer,2004). Different researchers have used different terms for collocations based on differentresearch purpose.J.R. Firth (1957) defined collocation as the company words keep their relationships withother words. According to Halliday (1966), collocation is the co-occurrence of two words, independent of grammatical types and likely to take place over sentence boundaries. Anotherdefinition might be “the way words combine in predictable ways” (Hill, 2000:48). A numberof overlapping definitions of co本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
