Chapter Four Evidential Analysis in English Editorials

4.1 The Features of Evidentiality in English Editorials
The features of evidentiality in English editorials will be discussed from twoaspects, which are the general frequency of evidentials and the distribution of eachtype in English editorials. The table indicates that 338 evidentials are found in 10 editorials, in which thereare 184 sentences in total. That is to say, the average frequency of evidentials is 1.837per sentence. In Hu (1994b:25)’s research, the frequency of evidentials in news reportand debate are 0.821 and 0.864 per sentence respectively. In Chafe (1986:262)’sresearch, there are 60 occurrences of evidentials per thousand words in conversationand 64 occurrences of evidentials per thousand words in academic writing. In order tocompare with chafe’s survey, it is necessary to adopt the same statistical method tocalculate the occurrences of evidentials in every 1000 words. There are 4533words inten editorials and 338 evidentials in total. That is 74.6 occurrences of evidentials perthousand words in English editorials. By the comparison with Hu and Chafe, it can beconcluded that the frequency of evidentials in English editorials is relatively high.

Conclusion

According to the research questions in Chapter three, the major findings can begeneralized as follows:Firstly, the features of evidentiality in English editorials are explored from twoaspects, which are the general frequency of evidentials and the distribution of eachtype. Compared with Hu and Chafe’s survey, the frequency of evidentials in Englisheditorials is relatively high. The average frequency of evidentials is 1.837 persentence, and 74.6 occurrences of evidentials per thousand words. Based on HuZhuangin’s model, the evidentials can be classified into seven categories, amongwhich hearsay occupies the first place, taking up 29.3%, deduction occupies thesecond place, taking up 28.1%, expectations occupy another large part, taking up25.1%, while verbal resources occupy the least proportion, only 1.2%. In addition tothat, reliability, belief and induction also occupy small parts among the evidentials,which are 9.2%, 4.1% and 3.0% respectively.Secondly, the study of evidentiality is an effective way to explore discoursefeatures. By the exploration of the features of evidentiality in English editorials, thediscourse features of English editorials can be generalized as follows: subjectivity,implicity and credibility.
