摘要:This present thesis adopts the modality framework of Palmer. Broadly speaking, thesignificance of this study is in a few aspects: firstly,the argumentative composition is a veryimportant writing genre not only in daily life but also in written English in CET and TEM forChinese college students.

Chapter Four Contrastive Analysis of Modal Verbs in WECCL and NS Texts


4.1 Research Subject
This thesis pays more attention to the use of modal verbs in the English argumentativeessays written by Chinese English learners and English native speakers. In the literaturereview, the thesis has mentioned the vitality of modal verbs in the section of expressingdistinctive futures of modal verbs. Modal verbs are the core of all the expressions to expressmodality approach, and modality is subject to modal verbs. So modal verbs are the researchsubject. The researched modal verbs includes can, will, should, must, could, might, shall,would, may and so on. These modal verbs were extracted from WECCL and NS corpora,which are employed to compare the modality of modal verbs. The topic of this thesis is the study on modality of modal verbs in English argumentativeessays written by Chinese English learners. This present study attempts to answer thefollowing questions through comparison with frequencies, frequency, Chi-square andlog-likelihood by the usage of modal verbs:Firstly, based on the two different corpora of Chinese English learners and nativespeakers, the author aims to find out whether there are differences in using modal verbs, andtestify which modal verbs Chinese English learners overused or underused.

Conclusion


Generally speaking, this research contrasts the differences of Chinese English learnersand English native speakers in the use of modal words with the corpora instrument ofAntConc. In this paper, from the schematic point of view the author has contributed ananalysis for the study.
