Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research background
With China’s accession to WTO in 2001, the world culture and economy areincreasingly global, which directly leads to the hot trend of learning English around China.Because of this, great emphasis has been put on the English skill training at eachEducational level. However, in order to meet the increasing demand for professionals inmodern society, the in-depth reform of higher education has never been ceased. Andhigher education gradually transformed from elitism to popularization, which deepenspeople’s understanding for higher education. While，as one of the essential parts for highereducation, higher vocational education reveals its unique features. Firstly, the number ofvocational college graduates goes larger than that of undergraduate universities’. Secondly,larger amount of practical talents have been cultivated through higher vocationaleducation.Nowadays, since English professionals are widely welcomed among all thevocational college graduates, China’s Ministry of Higher Education puts forward thescheme for vocational English teaching which mainly aims to cultivate practical Englishtalents catering to social needs and to strive to improve college English majors’ practicalability to use English. English writing, as the most important index in measuring students’comprehensive ability of English application, its improvement will significantly contributeto the accuracy in using English. But affected by the deep-rooted problems ascomparatively weak English base, poor autonomous learning ability and bad study habits,the present writing capacity of VC English majors is far from satisfactory, and thatrequires us to fully understand students’ learning process and detect their various barriersin writing, especially those frequently turned up. Only in this way can we improve theteaching quality as well as help English majors in vocational college better grasp properEnglish learning skills and quickly upgrade their practical writing ability.

1.2 Significance of the study
The errors in English writings have long been remarkably emphasized in the processof ESL teaching and learning because they carry on the following profound significances.Firstly, the study on errors does enhance researchers’ sensitivity to understand the learners’writing process, their problems together with their psychological activities. Secondly,researchers also keep a welcoming attitude towards errors which could facilitate theprocess of their linguistic studies. Thirdly, error analysis helps teachers conclude the common difficulties shared by most students in their writings, thus teachers can makeprogress in adopting effective teaching methods. Lastly, error studies could shed somelight for students to have deep insights into their weaknesses in learning.However, in recent years, while judging students’ scores obtained from the writingsection in CET-4, it is not difficult to discover the poor performance of VC English majors,which does contradict with the high requirement for their written communicative ability.Thus, having a thorough analysis of the writing errors committed by English majors isextremely urgent and could be of great help for the improvement of their writingproficiency.
