Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Studies on Anxiety and Learning Anxiety
The word anxiety comes from Germany vocabulary angst, there is a few booksdiscussing anxiety before 1950, a mass of researches about anxiety and relevant subjectsappears after Freud referred to anxiety in his book Introduction to Psychoanalysis.Many anxiety researchers give definitions to anxiety. Scovel (1978) describedanxiety as a state of worry and a sense of vaguely fear, and Brown thought that anxietyconnected with other emotions, such as unease, self-doubt, apprehension and fear.Through investigating the previous studies, Rollo May(1996) are able to give thedefinition of anxiety that is the apprehension causes by a threat to some value that theindividual thinks essential to his existence as a personality. Merriam Webster gives thedefinition of the term of anxiety as “an abnormal and overwhelming sense ofapprehension and fear often marked by physiological signs (such as sweating, tension,and tremble), by doubt concerning the reality and nature of the threat, and by self-doubtabout one's capacity to cope with it.” There was not a concordant definition of this wordbecause it has so many different potential causes and degrees of intensity, but we cansummarize some characteristics of anxiety from the previous studies. Anxiety is a stateof unease in the diffusion. The characteristic of anxiety is that we will feel helplessnessand uneasiness in the face of danger.

2.2 Studies on Language Learning Strategies
Researches on language learning strategies (LLS) rise from 1970s. The complexityof LLS leads to the results that researchers give distinct definitions to the term LLSfrom different points of view. Stern (1983) points out learning strategies are the generaltendency and general characteristics of techniques that use by the foreign languagelearners. Weinstein and Mayer (1986) define learning strategies as the behaviors andthoughts that a learner engages in during learning, which are intended to influence thelearner’s encoding process from the perspective of cognitive psychology. Rubin (1987)considers that learning strategies are strategies which contribute to the development ofthe language system, which the learners construct and affect learning directly. Mayer(1988) regards learning strategies as specific methods or skills. Chamot (1990) assertslearning strategies are techniques, approaches or deliberate actions that students take forthe purpose of facilitate the learning, recall of both linguistic and content areainformation. Oxford (1990) gives the definition as following: language learningstrategies are specific behaviors or actions which learners use to make the learningprocess easier,faster, more enjoyable and more effective.
