Secondly, in the reasoning ofeuphemisms, together with various kinds of information in the cognitive context, anon-argumentative deductive method shall be adopted by which an implicitpresupposition shall be inferred before inferring the implicit conclusion in order toachieve an accurate understanding of the euphemisms.With relevance between the euphemistic meaning and backstage meaning andcontext as the foundation of euphemism understanding, CBR provides a theoreticalframework for interpreting the dynamic meaning construction mechanism ofeuphemisms.In the previous chapters, the author has integrated CBT and RT, and thus hasproposed a cognitive pragmatic framework of CBR model for the dynamic meaningconstruction mechanism of euphemism. In this chapter, the author will put emphasison the construal mechanism of euphemism’s meaning construction under theguidance of this proposed CBR model.

Conclusion

This paper first offers a general introduction to the study including themotivation, objectives, methodology and data collection and layout of this thesis.Then it limits the definition of euphemisms in this thesis and accounts for the history,function, motives, and tendency of euphemism. In the meantime, a brief review ofstudies of euphemism both at home and abroad is presented. Following that, meritsand demerits of CBT and RT are discussed respectively, and the complementaries ofthe two theories are illustrated as well. Based on this feature of the two theories, thetheoretical framework of CBR is established to fill the gap. With the application ofCBR model to euphemism, several typical examples are analyzed in order to test thefeasibility and the explanatory power of this model to interpret the meaningconstruction mechanism of euphemism.Through the qualitative analysis and a series of examples, it can be found thatthe interpretation of euphemism is a dynamic cognitive process in which two mentalinput spaces are established in view of context. The input spaces are established bycombining relevant knowledge from different domains. The two input spaces havepartial mappings, i.e. relevance, on which euphemisms are based. Different conceptsare connected through optimal relevance. In an effort to gain the real meaning of theeuphemistic expressions, an abstract blended space shared by the two input spaceshas to be formed between the meaning of the language symbols and the loadedinformation of the symbols by means of inference.
