4.1 Literal Translation

Literal translation refers to the methods that in translating process, the form oforiginal language should be kept as much as possible. It’s not only the embodiment ofskopos theory, but also that of professional ethics, namely, to respect original author andaudiences. Peter Newmark, an English translation theorist believes that 'translationmethod is related to the whole text' (Newmark, 2001:81). He also illustrates that '…communicative as in semantic translation, provided that equivalent effect is secured, theliteral word-for-word translation is the only valid method of translation. There is noexcuse for unnecessary 'synonyms', let alone paraphrases, in any type of translation'(Newmark, 2001). Because the fact that Operator's User Guide of X SEM is characterizedby professionalism and objectivity, and the tone of which presents to be strong andirreversible, literal translation plays a significant role in translating it. Western translationtheorist Steiner argues that 'the ideal condition for translation is that it does not sufferfrom any loss in translation' ( Steiner, 2001：319). In order to achieve the ideal state,translators needs to use the most appropriate translation method to solve the practicalproblems in translating. In the course of using SEM, if customer found that the content oftranslation does not match with actual situation, it will definitely lead to disputes, anddamage the image of the company and brings other serious consequences. So in theprocess of translation, exaggeration and false forgery are strictly prohibited for thepurpose of ensuring authenticity of the content. The structure and semantics of sourcematerial can be maintained as much as possible by adopting literal translation. It is moresuitable to be used when dealing with proper nouns, noun phrases and relatively simplesentence structure in mechanical engineering texts. Therefore, the analysis of this part is concerned with the translation of the proper nouns and simple sentences.

5.1 Practical Experience

This translation practice is a real experience, in which knowledge and skills learnedin class are applied in mechanical engineering translation.
