Dual Light Source for Backlight Systems(photo)

Abstract
A dual light source of backlight systems was proposed to obtainan adjustable 代写留学生论文viewing angle of LCDs. A top lightguide plate(LGP-T) in combination with a reverse prism sheet was utilized toredirect the emitting rays towards restricted normal viewingcones while a bottom lightguide plate (LGP-B) towards wideviewing cones. Adjustable viewing angles could be easily switchedbetween 60 ° and 140 ° according to personal pReference.Luminous uniformity of 81% and 72% was acquired for narrowand wide viewing modes, respectively. In addition, a cost benefitof super high brightness could be easily achieved when adopt thedual light source of backlight system module.
1. Introduction
As the urgent demand of multimedia informationapplications, displays are supposed to be used for variouspurposes and in various situations. For example, in the case wherea presentation meeting is held, it is desirable that the display haswide viewing angle characteristics because a number of peoplewill watch the display simultaneously. In another case where thedisplay is used for inputting personal information in public places,it is desirable that the viewing angle is just a certain view for theuser’s personal demanding. A kind of privacy filters whichconsists alternating plastic layers of relatively high or lowabsorbing coefficients is capable of multi-viewing angles. [1]Louvered privacy filters allow the user to view the image within arange of viewing angles and to block the image outside the rangeof viewing angles. However, the privacy filters can notconveniently adapt the viewing angle characteristics to differentneeds, especially in an electrical approach.
A method has been proposed for electrically controllingthe viewing angles by utilizing an additional polymer dispersedtype LC (PDLC) panel. [2] The refractive index of the PDLCmolecules coincides with that of glass substrates so that the panelis seen to be transparent when a voltage is applied. Consequently,a TN panel with an additional PDLC panel attains the smallviewing angular dependence similar to the angular characteristicsof conventional TN LC when applying voltage. In contrast, lightis scattered so that a broad angular mode is obtained when novoltage is applied. However, a low light transmittance andincreasing cost and thickness of module usually hinderapplications by the above-mentioned method. Instead of acomplex design of placing an additional LC layer, a dual lightsource backlight system was proposed to adjust the viewingangles of the display by controlling light direction in anillumination system.
2. Principles
Dual light source backlight systems, shown in Figure 1,are composed of two stacked lightguide plates in combinationwith a reverse prism sheet. When the top lightguide plate (LGP-T)is illuminated, obliquely emitted light is redirected towards thenormal viewing by a reverse prism sheet and then is confinedwithin a small angular range. The micro groove structures on theback side of LGP-T have good directionality of light. So that theLGP-T with a reverse prism sheet is capable of restricting theemitted https://www.51lunwen.org/liuxuelunwendx/light within a small angular cone. This operating modeprovides the display module narrow viewing angle characteristics.
