Chapter One Introduction to the Translation Project

1.1 Introduction to the Source Text

Rock Arts are “epic without words” of ancient humans, depicting distant life and the imagination and wishes of ancestors. The book Huashan Rock Art introduces the related knowledge of Huashan Rock Art in Zuojiang Valley, China, which promotes the popularization of Huashan Rock Art. 

1.1.1 Background of the Source Text

Huashan Rock Art, located in the Zuojiang River and its tributary Mingjiang River Valley in Chongzuo City, Guangxi , has strong artistic connotation and important archaeological research value. Huashan Rock Art is unique because its landscape and rock arts are combined with the vivid and rich social life of Luoyue people, the ancestors of Zhuang ethnic group in southern China. On July 15, 2016, China World Cultural Heritage Nomination Project was selected into the World Heritage List, and Huashan Rock Art successfully filled the blank of World Heritage Project of Rock Art in China. (Zhang Xiaocui, 2018) 

1.2 Significance of the Translation Project

As a student studying for a master's degree in translation at Guilin University of Electronic Technology, living in Guangxi, I should contribute to the publicity of Huashan Rock Art. The book Huashan Rock Art describes all kinds of rock arts in Huashan Rock Art in detail, and introduces the background knowledge comprehensively, so it is suitable to be translated into English. It can publicize Huashan Rock Art, improve the popularity of Huashan Rock Art, better publicize China traditional culture, and promote the development of local tourism to a certain extent. At the same time, the translation and publicity of the cultural background related to the bronze drum will not only help to improve the popularity of the bronze drum culture, but also help the public to know more about Huashan Rock Art through understanding the bronze drum culture. 

Chapter Two Description of the Translation Process

2.1 Pre-translation Preparation

In pre-translation preparation, the translator should have a thorough understanding of features of source text, make a choice of tools and a choice of parallel texts. 

2.1.1 Thorough Understanding of the Features of Source Text

Before translation, the translator should first have a thorough understanding of features of this text. The translator analyzed the features of the text from three aspects of lexical level, syntactic level and discourse level.

At lexical level, the biggest difficulty is that there are many culture-loaded words in the text. Because these culture-loaded words have the unique cultural characteristics of China, it is difficult to convey their original meanings perfectly in English translation. Therefore, the translator will choose appropriate translation methods according to the context to achieve the best translation effect as far as possible. 

At syntactic level, there are many complicated sentences and short sentences in this text.
