Chapter One  Introduction

1.1 Introduction to the Author

Major Cohen is an American coffee expert. He began his second career as a coffee educator for Starbucks in 1995 due to his passion and curiosity for coffee. After graduating from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Cohen worked as a high school teacher of photography and film for more than 19 years before embarking on his new journey in the coffee world.

Despite his recent retirement, Cohen continues to play a significant role in the coffee industry as a certified Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) licensed trainer. With his extensive experience and knowledge in coffee, he is a valuable asset to the coffee community and a reliable source of expertise for those seeking to learn more about the art and science of coffee.

1.2 Introduction to the Source Text

Coffee for Dummies is a part of the For Dummies series, which is aimed at introducing unfamiliar topics to readers in an easy-to-understand manner. Written by Major Cohen in 2021, it covers a wide range of topics about the coffee world, from the farm to the cup, making it an excellent resource for anyone looking to learn more about the industry. 

As a reference book, the source text is designed and classified into many independent chapters, providing readers with a comprehensive guide to everything about coffee. It is filled with fun facts and practical advice to help readers better understand and enjoy their coffee. The series has been a great success, with over 200 million books sold worldwide and translated into numerous languages.

Chapter Two  Translation Process

2.1 Pre-translation

Pre-translation is a major step in the whole process of a translation practice or project, during which the translator should make many efforts to ensure a smooth start.

First, a careful reading of the whole source text was done. At the same time, to fully understand the source text, the translator did a lot of research online to acquire more background information about it and its main topic—coffee. Additionally, the translator watched some coffee-themed documentaries to better appreciate the vivid description in the source text.  

Then, translation theory and tools were picked and adopted. In order to render a good target text, an appropriate translation theory is a must-have. Bearing that in mind, the translator chose the Functional Equivalence Theory by Nida as the guiding theory of the translator practice. 

Moreover, dictionaries, both paper and online, were used to help the translator clarify the meaning of the source text while computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, such as Trados and MemoQ were used to resolve language discrepancies and conflicts during the complex translation process.

2.2 In-translation

This step has several difficulties, primarily due to the abundance of unfamiliar terms in the source text. Moreover, the semi-technical words in the source text are another challenge in the translation process.
