The main purpose of this report is to analyze the corporate strategy at Cardinal Health. The report comprises Cardinal Health’s product-related diversification strategy analysis which implemented by acquisitions and its opportunities and challenges. Cardinal Health is the biggest player in the US health care industry. It is also a large multinational company. By discussing the corporate strategy, on one hand to know more details about the company’s background, how and why Walter carried out product-related diversification, and how about the results that the company adhered to the strategy. On the other hand, the analysis can assist to find the potential problems of the company during its operation and solve them so that Cardinal Health could fit with the increasing international activities. In order to figure out these problems, this report will emphasize on Cardinal Health’s product-related diversification, acquisition condition also with the trouble it faced. Since strategy is very important to the corporation. It may determine the company’s development direction. 2. Introduction
Cardinal Health is the largest player in the United States. Robert Walter set it up in 1971. At first, it named Cardinal Foods, which deal in food distribution. In 1983, the company listed. After a SWOT analysis to firm’s future development. In 1988, Walter ended food distribution business. Later, in 1994, it changed its name to Cardinal Health, which distributed both foods and drugs. Since competitors emerged, Walter carried out the product-related diversification strategy by acquisitions. The firm divided into four divisions. During the periods of 1980 and 2004, Cardinal Health experienced about sixty acquisitions. The recent two were Intercare (2003) and Alaris (2004). Until 2004, a new Senior Vice President was hired, the company faced a problem of market value had dropped. To return its leadership position and further development, Cardinal Health’s leadership should research the whole company deeply and take a series of way to fit with the international activities.

3.1Product-related Diversification
Product-related diversification is one of the strategies of diversification. The strategy makes use of the differences of products to spread risks and enhance the operating safety of the company (Bottazzi & Secchi, 2005). It is a long-term strategy for the corporation to develop variety brands or variety business. Walter adopted the product-related diversification within the United State to develop itself.
3.1.1Motivations
External Conditions:
1) Competitive condition. In 1995, there was a competitor emerged, and it attempted to cut Cardinal Health’s market share. If Cardinal Health did not take any measures, FoxMeyer would cut the market share definitely. Therefore, Walter had to adopt the certain methods to protect the benefit from being carve up.
