ishidioms have always aroused the curiosity of linguists and there is a long tradition in thestudy of idioms, especially within the fields of lexicology and lexicography. Withoutdenying the importance of this tradition, this thesis addresses the status of Englishidioms in recent formal and prevailing cognitive linguistic theorizing. To explore thecognitive context whether or not can facilitate the comprehension of English idioms，thethesis first defines the definition of the cognitive context and presents the features of it.Cognitive context's dynamic and static functions on processing the semantic of theEnglish idioms are discussed as well. Since the features and its dynamic and staticfunctions have been highlighted, the thesis try to apply it into the English idioms study.Therefore, the thesis tries to classify the English idioms on the basis of their rhetoricdevices and integrate the cognitive perspective on them. People can perceive therhetoric devices in their cognitive context and then with the help of the three semanticcognitive mechanisms to acquire the meaning of the English idioms. The threeprocessing modes are the semantic projection, the semantic linking and the semanticblending.This thesis is devoted to showing the flinctions of cognitive context in Englishidiom semantic decoding and intends to help English idiom learners process this kind oflanguage form in a more effective and possible way.

1.3 Organization of the Thesis论文结构
This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one gives a brief introduction tobackground, purpose and significance, and a preview of the thesis. Chapter two turns toreview the related literature on the context and the context in cognitive study. Thetheories and the thoughts of the related linguistic scholars either at abroad or at homeare illustrated in this chapter. Chapter three and chapter four are the core part of thethesis. Chapter three is mainly concerned with the semantic processing functions of thecognitive context. As well as the definition and features of the cognitive context areillustrated, the dynamic and the static functions of the cognitive context are also bediscussed in this chapter. Chapter four is mainly concerned with the functions ofcognitive context in English idioms semantic processing. It consists of the definitionand the features of the English idioms. The English idioms are classified into three maingroups: the idioms of figurative, which consist of the idioms simile and the idioms ofmetaphor; the idioms of allusion; the idioms of repetition. Meanwhile, the threesemantic integration modes have also been illustrated in this chapter, they are thesemantic projection, the semantic linking and the semantic blending. Chapter five drawsa conclusion on this idiom study and points out the limitations of the thesis and thefuture prospects of the cognitive study on the English idioms.
