CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

The second part is the Chinese-English interpretation. She somehow could notrecollect the Chinese equivalent for 可持续发展(“sustainable development").Reluctant to give up, she thought for a while and explained the phrase: developmentfeaturing sustainability; we pursue development, and we do not influence our futuregenerations' development. Wordy as the interpretation was, she thought she had graspedthe essence of the phrase. In 2010, the researcher became a linguistics major, and cameto know a term, compensatory strategies. In retrospect, she had used CpS long before sheknew the existence of them. Fascinated by how students strained themselves to expresssomething that was temporarily beyond their capabilities, she decided to carry out astudy on CpS.


1.1 Need for the Study
理由四有必要把当前的研究。首先,词汇量有直接的关系,在解释如何执行。GILE(引忠,2003)认为,一个好的译员必须具备几个素质,它们之间是一个高层次的语言能力。钟(2003年)语言参考到GILE的语言能力提出了长期的知识。李(2005)指出,掌握单词的构成部分的语言知识。想法,词汇量的大小是相关译员的表现已经得到认可许多学者(如王,2001马,2003年,吴,2010;许,2010;王,2011)强调,一个合格的译员必须坚持扩大他们的词汇量。Four reasons necessitate the current study.First, vocabulary has a direct bearing on how one performs during interpretation.Gile (as cited in Zhong, 2003) has argued that a good interpreter must possess severalqualities; among them is a high level of linguistic competence. Zhong (2003) proposesthe term knowledge for language to refer to Gile's linguistic competence. Li (2005)points out that mastery of words constitutes part of the knowledge for language. Theidea that the size of the vocabulary is related to the interpreter's performance has beenendorsed by many scholars (e.g. Wang,2001; Ma, 2003; Wu, 2010; Xu, 2010; Wang,2011) emphasize that a qualified interpreter must persistently enlarge their vocabulary.
Second, CpS can help solve lexical difficulties in interpretation. Wang (2001) notesthat no matter how skillful an interpreter is,there always exists the possibility that s/hewill run into unfamiliar words, and using other words to express similar notions is aviable alternative. Li (2007) notices that students often resort to compensatory measuresto make up for the language deficiency. Liu (2007) stresses that application of CSs,especially CpS, can prevent interpreters from falling into silence and sustaincommunication. Jones (2008) emphasizes that interpreters have a number ofpossibilities open to them when faced with the eventuality of the unknown word. Theycan grasp the general meaning of the word and be in a position to give a reasonablerendering of it, even though the translation they give is not the exact dictionarytranslation, or perhaps provide a generic term rather than the specific one. Jiang andYang (2009) highlight that interpreters can use CpS to express points they have no ideaabout or know for sure. Tao and Bao (2008) underline that when interpreters encountera word that is currently unknown to them, they can get through the situation by using asimilar word or phrase.
