Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Background
The most basic and toughest task for English beginners is the accumulation of Englishvocabulary. The students always find that they forget these words easily. And the traditionalteaching method can not release the burden and fully fulfill the needs of making them readand memorize new English vocabularies. There is a phenomenon that a large number ofcollege students who have learned English for more than nine years can not even read out newwords correctly, not mention their abilities of applying English into daily use. In short,they dowell in different kinds of examinations instead of using the target language. With theincreasing of words,the rote memory became more difficult than ever,at the same time, thelarge vocabulary became a burden for students to remember and also may confuse them.Recently,there is a tendency that the onset of learning English comes earlier and earlier.As Steven Krashen (2003) stated,"it is difficult to be active and succeed in doinginternational business,science,scholarship, and politics without using English in today'sworld,,. The Chinese Phonetic Alphabet (CPA) is created as the official Romanization system ofChinese to make the Chinese characters easier to read and remember. It adopted the samealphabets as English. Though some of the letters have similar sounds, there are somedifferences exist. Thus, some of them have the similar pronunciation,while others are not.And In CPA,every letter has a special sound,we can read one word by extracting from itscorresponding letter name. While in English one alphabet may have different sounds in1 different words. So many people believe that the two language systems may cause problemswhen they were leamt simultaneously. They fear that when children are learning English andCPA at the same time,they would confuse the letter names in CPA and those in English,andas are result,misspellings or misrecognitions may occur in both the two systems. Of course,this phenomenon has bad effects on their abilities of listening,speaking, reading and writingin English.
