摘要:In light of current situation,the present study plans to investigate morpheme "-ing"attrition of Chinese EFL learners, hoping to unveil features of morpheme “-ing” attritionand generate useful findings to complement language attrition study.

morpheme “-ing” attrition, the present study makes a tentative inquisition withina limited scope, serving as a reference for future attrition studies in Chinese context.According to reflections of the author,the following suggestions are to be given for furtherresearch:
First of all,the combination of cross-sectional and longitudinal research methods isfavored so as to conduct investigations in depth and yield more convincing results.Cross-sectional study allows researchers to compare different variables at the same time,while longitudinal study is valuable in documenting details over time. In addition,longitudinal study is advantageous in suggesting cause-and-effect relationships from therecord of event sequences. Moreover, future attrition researches should benefit from bothwritten and speaking tasks employed in research instruments.
Then,although previous researches, as well as the present study, are competent inverifying the existence of Critical Threshold, the specific threshold values for eachsub-category of language skills have not been defined yet. Researchers and foreignlanguage teachers are called upon to conduct related studies with multi-dimensionalvariables in various linguistic aspects,so as to propose definite threshold values abovewhich learners are resistant to attrition. In addition, the grouping of attrition time lengthneeds to be further discussed in an effort to better explore the influence of attrition timelength on language attrition.
Last but not least, it's worth mentioning that learning experience of other foreignlanguages besides English (L3) may exert positive cross-linguistic influence on theretention of English (L2). However, specific investigations oriented towards differentobjectives need to be carried out to determine the nature of such cross-linguistic influence.Besides,from a larger perspective, language attrition, in line with language acquisition,should continue to be studied together within the scope of language development, whichwill benefit our exploration into the way human minds deal with language.
