Chapter Five Conceptual Metaphorical Analysis of "Eye"

5-1 Various Senses of "eye"
As a matter of course, there are various meanings for the body termof “eye，，in English.In the Advanced Learner，s English-Chinese Dictionary (2004)，below the entryof “eye”，there list eight items，seven of which belong to the noun "eye" while the onerest belongs to the verb "eye".Before we come to the analysis of eye，an examination of the senses provided bythe dictionaries is necessary to give a new list of senses as we identify. The (4) (5) (6)(7) items from the Oxford Dictionary and (10) items from Collins English Dictionaryonline can be included by the (9) item from Collins. The original items are the hole inthe end of a needle, a piece of metal curved round, a potato tuber, and a spot on abutterfly wing. They all share the feature that they have the shape of an eye withround shape or irregular shapes that are similar to round, exactly what the (5) itemfrom WordNet indicates. Thus we will take the sense of “a structure or making havingthe shape of an eye" as the sense that accounts for all these items. The Collinsdictionary even subdivides the body part of eye into the internal organ of sight and theexternal part of an eye.

Conclusion

In this thesis, we have revealed part of the metaphorical mechanisms thataccounts for polysemy of English body terms by means of the case study of “eye”.The conceptual metaphor theory is adopted to give an in-depth analysis of thepolysemous structure of "eye" at the level of conceptual system. It is presented in thisthesis how metaphorical mechanisms work to generate senses for polysemous “eye，，，how the many senses of polysemous “eye” are related to each other, and what theexperiential basis for conceptual metaphors of "eye".
