1.2 Research Objectives and Research Questions
Lexical cohesion is defined as “the cohesive effect achieved by the selection of vocabulary” (Halliday & Hasan, 2001: 274). Halliday & Hasan (2001) make a survey that lexical cohesive devices account for about fifty percent in various discourse patterns, which can be seen patently that lexical cohesion plays a prominent role in English writing. Therefore, the objectives of the study are to explore the characteristics of lexical cohesive devices in English majors’ writings, to analyze the types of errors in the use of lexical cohesive devices in writings and to elaborate the reasons of errors. The study contributes to strengthening students’ awareness of using lexical cohesive devices and instructing students how to use them more effectively. To make sure the academic rigour, the subjects of the study are thirty samples of college English majors from Written English Corpus of Chinese Learners (SWECCL 2.0). The present study attempts to probe into the following questions: 1. What are the general distribution of lexical cohesive devices in English majors’ argumentative writings? 2. What are the types and frequency of errors in the use of lexical cohesive devices in English majors’ argumentative writings? 3. What are the reasons of the errors in the use of lexical cohesive devices?

Chapter Two Literature Review
This chapter will deal with the theoretical framework for the present study and make a general review of previous empirical studies abroad and at home. As for the theoretical framework in the study, the author will introduce the concepts of key terms, the relationships between cohesion and coherence, the taxonomy of lexical cohesion, as well as error analysis theory.
2.1 Cohesion and Coherence
