1.2 Significance of the Study
“Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed”. (D.A.Wilkins, 1972). Therefore, the importance of vocabulary is obvious in the process of language learning and teaching. Vocabulary teaching is the challenging part of English teaching, at the same time, it plays an indispensable role in the process of teaching practice in primary school. Taking the students’ distinctive characteristics of learning initiative and intellectual development into deep consideration, teachers need to transform the means as well as methods of teaching constantly. Vocabulary teaching has been the burning issue that attracted a lot of attention of teachers and other related education authorities. It is worth to apply one teaching method that is suitable for students’ physical and psychological features in class. When confronting with children who are English beginners and their understanding as well as cognition are constrained by the age. It is necessary for teachers to teach students in accordance with their aptitude and design the method within flexibility and good effectiveness according to the specific situation. The sandwich teaching method not only embodies the basic understanding of the comprehending law, but also reflects the humanistic spirit of the emotional law and gives expression to the communicative principles of the communicative approach. The idea of sandwich has a long
history. However, most of the previous researches only paid attention to the value of sandwich itself rather than combining this teaching method with authentic English teaching syllabus in English class. This paper makes a pioneering implementation of sandwich method in English classroom teaching and seeks to explore the intrinsic value of it. What is worth thinking about is: how can we meet the needs of teacher’s teaching and the child’s interest in the primary school English class, meanwhile, improve the listening and speaking ability of the students in the lower grade effectively and achieve the goal in the different cognitive domains of language memory, language understanding, comprehensive application of language and the creation of new language.
