Chapter Two Literature Review
This chapter firstly gives an overview of corpus-based translation studies, withan emphasize on translation universals and simplification. Secondly, studies oninterpreting corpus will be summarized. Thirdly, studies of simplification based oninterpreting corpus will be given. In the end, the summary of the previous studies willbe concluded.
2.1 Corpus-based Translation Studies
Corpus-based translation studies are new disciplines which have been developedrapidly in recent 20 years. The history of researches has just been more than ten years, including the research of
methodology, application study on the instrument level andabstract theoretical research on the features of translation (Wang Kefei, 2006:8). Thetranslation studies using corpus as a tool can be traced back to the 1980s (Laviosa,2002:21, cf. Wang Kefei, Huang Libo, 2007:101). Vanderauwera (1985) uses fiveEnglish translation versions of Dutch novels as the corpus in order to find theinterlingual simplification, explicitation and normalization expressed by thetranslational language. The study shows a prototype of translation universal studiesbased on the corpus. Gellerstam (1986, cf. Wang Kefei, 2012) makes a comparisonbetween the novels written in original Swedish and those translated by Swedish. Thelanguage features of “translationese” are discussed from the perspective ofinterlingual analogy. Basically, the theoretical sources of corpus-based translationstudies are the traditional British linguistics thoughts represented by J. R. Firth, M. A.K. Halliday and John Sinclair, as those thoughts are the direct theoretical sources ofcorpus linguistics (Stubbs, 1993; Laviosa, 2002:5). This school believes that the studyof language should be based on real data, which means that the authentic texts shouldbe used as the main objects of the study when an empirical research is conducted. Theintrospective examples are a part of the interpretation behavior. The text as a wholeshould be used as the basic units when a research is conducted. Comparison should bethe basic research model based on the corpora (Stubbs, 1993: 8-13, cf. Wang Kefei,Huang Libo, 2008:10).

2.2 Interpreting Corpus Studies
The symbol of interpreting corpus studies being regarded as a branch ofcorpus-based translation studies is the publication of Shlesinger (1998) in Meta:“Corpus-Based Interpreting Studies as an Offshoot of Corpus-Based TranslationStudies”. From then on, the interpreting corpus studies have been at their initial stage. The researches on corpus-based translation studies have been flourished (Sergio F. S.and Falbo C., 2012:9). And the domestic starting point of corpus-based interpreting studies is the “International Seminar on Corpus and Translation Studies” hosted byShanghai Jiao Tong University in 2007.Zhang Wei (2013) indicates that we can benefit a lot from building interpretingcorpus.
