etic Alphabet Method.Although teachers in primary school realized the importance of phonics and picture books,they still taught IPA in class.Onone hand they are not familiar with phonics and can’t find out the most effective wayto teach phonics.On the other hand,phonics is not involved in the teaching materialsin my school.However,IPA can’t help to build the relationship between letters andsounds,which makes it difficult for students to memorize new vocabulary and masterthe meaning of new words.Besides,the method is quite obscure for primary schoolstudents,and even though they have mastered the symbols,they still have obstacles inpronouncing new words without phonetic symbols.Phonics offers them help to solveall these problems.And picture books can create a relaxing environment for them toconcentrate on language learning.Firstly,pictures assist students in guessing themeanings of unfamiliar words.In addition,each picture book tells a whole story,andit is quite a lot of excitement for students to predict the development of the stories andcultivate their ability of imagination and critical thinking.What’s more,words inpicture books appear repetitively,which is beneficial for students to memorize themeanings,pronunciations and spellings of the words.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Phonics

This part describes the basic concept of phonics and definitions of key termsrelated to phonics.The previous studies on phonics at home and abroad are illustratedas well.

2.1.1 Basic Concepts

Based on Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary(2014),phonics is defined as a method of teaching people to read based on the sounds thatletters represent.According to Collins Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary(2017),phonics refers to a method of teaching people to read by training them to associatewritten letters with their sounds.Phonics,though different definitions are given,isconsidered as an important method related to letters and sounds.The purpose ofphonics was to help students master the relationship between letters and sounds byteaching the sounds of individual letters and the forty-four phonemes of English.Exactly,phonics teaches the relationships between graphemes and phonemesaccording to a set sequence(Johnston&Watson,2005).After such knowledge istaught,young readers are able to decode unfamiliar letter strings by themselves,and read them independently(Catts,Herrera,Nielsen&Bridges,2015).

When it refers to phonics,two types of phonics should be mentioned.One isanalytic phonics,the other is synthetic phonics.Analytic phonics is a form of phonicsteaching in which sounding-out is not used.Instead,teachers show students how todeduce the common letter and sound in a set of words which share the same letter andsound in the beginning,later or end(Torgerson,Brooks&Hall,2006:5).Analyticphonics which is known as implicit phonics focuses on teaching the words in a whole,then analyzing on the constituent parts forming them.Unlike analytic phonics whichis a whole-to-part approach,synthetic phonics also called explicit phonics is apart-to-whole approach.When applying synthetic phonics,teachers should teach thesounds of letters and letter combinations first,afterwards guide students to formcompleted words.For instance,as for the word“send”,students should be taught thatthe individual letters in the word correspond to the sounds/s/,/e/,/n/and论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
