摘要:本文是一篇小学英语教学论文,本研究尝试用自然拼读法和绘本相结合,通过绘本中的有趣故事和图画调动学生的学习兴趣,让学生在语境中理解和掌握词汇,从而提高综合语言运用能力。

2.2 Picture Books

This part explains the definition of picture books,research on the relationship between phonics and picture books and selection criteria of picture books.

2.2.1 Definition of Picture Books

When it comes to picture books,scholars hold distinct perspectives.Nodelman(1988)thought the picture book was the combination of a large number of picturesand some words to convoy information or describe a whole story.Matsui Tadashi(2009),known as“father of the picture book”,pointed that the picture book was notsimply the sum of texts and pictures,and pictures were not only the tool to explain thetexts,but also the main carrier of the plots.Chinese researchers also gave plenty ofdefinitions to the picture book.Peng Yi(2006)defined it as a kind of art showing astory with pictures and words.Chen Hui(2006)believed it was created based on thegraphic relationship that mainly in the form of pictures and pictures were as importantas texts in picture books.Hao Guangcai(2009)explained how a good picture bookcould be created,and he mentioned a good picture book could tell story by picturesalone.

Based on all the definition listed above,it is clear they all have sometime incommon.Firstly,pictures in picture books are not the collateral of the text but evenmore important than the text.Secondly,picture books are used to express a theme andplot with pictures and texts.Thirdly,picture books are designed mainly for youngchildren to arouse their interest of knowledge.Therefore,the picture book is acombination of pictures and texts in accordance with the children’s cognitivecharacteristics to express a whole story.

4.1 Statistics of Vocabulary Knowledge Tests

The pre-tests were carried out on February 24th,2022,in order to see students’vocabulary knowledge before the experiment.And the purpose of post-testsconducted on June 20th,2022 is to find what stage of improvement the pupils reachedafter the experiment.The statistics of vocabulary knowledge tests are shown andanalyzed in this part to find the influence which picture-book-based phonics has onfifth graders’vocabulary knowledge.
