This novel has attracted widespread attention both at home and abroad.Manyoutstanding scholars have studied this novel from the perspective of themes,writingtechniques,and characters.As for theme and characters’study,predecessors mainlyanalyze the theme and the protagonists from the perspective of bildungsroman novels,while the formative factors of patriotism were rarely discussed.The study of this thesis isclosely related to the research of Liu Lu and that of Elizabeth Smith.Liu Lu has claimedthat“the theme of growing up,the spatial structure of the novel,and the integration ofpersonal and historical narratives all reinforce the complex morality”(Liu,2015:102).She reviews the novel from various perspectives,such as theme,historical background,structure,and character,but does not explore the significance of patriotic Education andpropaganda.Elizabeth D.Smith has analyzed the significance of German patrioticpropaganda in the Second World War from the perspective of war.However,she onlyaddresses the role of patriotic propaganda from the aspect of Germany.She does notexplore the formative factors of patriotism through a comparative analysis of patrioticpropaganda and education in both Germany and France.Accordingly,there is a shortage of analysis of the formative factors of the two protagonists’patriotism.

1.2 Research objectives,approach and significance

This thesis aims to analyze the formative factors of patriotism from the perspective ofdisciplinary power based on Foucault’s power theory.Three research questions are putforward:What are the formative factors of Werner’s“patriotism”?How did Werner’s“patriotism”disintegrate?What are the formative factors of Marie Laure’s patriotism?Inorder to conclude these three research questions.The thesis applies the research method ofclose reading to determine the formative factors of Werner’s“patriotism”and that ofMarie Laure’s patriotism.It applies the contrastive analysis method to analyze thedifferent formative factors between them.

This thesis sorts out the change in Werner’s ideology from the perspective ofdisciplinary power,digging out the formative factors as well as their effects on Werner’spatriotic ideology focusing on hierarchical observation,normalizing judgment andexamination.Secondly,it reveals the factors leading to the disintegration of Werner’s“patriotism”.Thirdly,it analyzes the formative factors of Marie Laure’s patriotism whichhas nothing to do with power theory.Through contrastive analysis of formative factors ofthese two protagonists’patriotism,this thesis figures out the proper way of patrioticeducation.
