important directions for the future development of children’s literature. This is a test of the writers’ ability to master the above-said “degree”.

CHAPTER 2 TABOO TOPICS IN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE

2.1 Characteristics of Taboo Topics in Children’s Literature

2.1.1 Topics only bounded out of children’s experience

Children’s literature is a work created by adult writers with children as the target. The inconsistency between creation and reception makes children’s literature often show an emphasis on the separation of children and adults, so those things that are considered to exclusively belong to the adult world become taboos, which are particularly evident in the taboo topics in children’s literature, and it can be said that boundedness is one of the typical characteristics of taboo topics in children’s literature.

The freedom of children literature’s writing is much less than that of adult literature’s writing, with the need to use easy-to-understand language, childlike phrases, truthfulness and beauty, and so on. For a long time, domestic and foreign writers of children’s literature have also followed such constraints, and once they violate them, their works are considered unsuitable for children’s reading. The emergence of children’s literature is not a process that occurs naturally from children’s own need to appreciate literature, but is based on a process of conscious literary creation by adults in order to distinguish the special characteristics of children. As long as the writers of children’s literature are adults, there will always hold an emphasis on the boundary between the world of children and the world of adults in children’s literature. In other words, the taboo topics in children’s literature themselves are dependent on this boundary. Throughout children’s literature, the topics identified as taboo are always based on the boundary between the world of children and the world of adults, where the two sides of the boundary are innocence and worldliness respectively. Sex, violence, death, and complex human interactions are all secrets of the adult world, and should be avoided as taboo topics in children’s literature.

2.2 Causes of Taboo Topic in Children’s Literature

2.2.1 Mainstream view of children

The so-called childhood taboos are actually a series of rules set up by adults for children, and such “hegemony” also makes adults and children become a binary dichotomy. The more antagonistic, the more “taboos” there are, the more children want to break the “taboos”, leading to deeper antagonism. So, what is the reason for adults to set up various of “taboos” on children?

When it comes to the image of children, all people agree that they are innocent and vulnerable. But in the early Christian period, “all children born are essentially demonic, although this is not intentional” (James et al, 1998). The child is positioned as “an untamed threat” (Corsaro, 9) who must be controlled and trained to “fit in”. (Corsaro, 9). Since the late Middle ages, from depictions of the child saint, and with the belief that adults should care for the young and innocent (Branscombe et al, 2000). Childhood is located as distinct from adulthood: a time of pure innocence which will never be recaptured and a time and carefree space which should be the best of our lives (Branscombe et al. 2000论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
