Chapter 2 Theoretical Foundation

2.1 The Overview of Ethical Criticism Abroad

Ethical criticism of western literature is based on the moral nature of Western literature.Even though the ethical and moral concepts of society had changed in the 20th century,literature still existed as an artistic expression of this ethical and moral change.As the famouscontemporary moral ethicist,Nussbaum said,the tragedies of ancient Greece and the realisticnovels of Britain and America are both components of moral philosophy,so reading novels“can develop moral faculties.”.(Nussbaum,1995:12)Starting from ancient Greek literature,western literature is ethical in its nature from its origin.Since the 18th century,due to theEnlightenment,literature emphasizing moral teaching and moral criticism has appeared inlarge numbers.A number of literary works aiming at moral teaching as well as workscriticizing literature by moral standards were published.However,real research works onethical literary did not appear until the mid to late 19th century.For example,Ralph WaldoEmerson had a presentation about Ethical Literary in 1838 and Charles White published awork,Essays in Literature and Ethics(1838),in 1853.In his book Essays in Literature andEthics,White mainly discussed the didactic and moral functions of literature from theperspective of religion,philosophy and ethics.(White,2015)White’s ethical literary wasactually a discussion of the question of the moral value of literature.In the latter half of the19th century,Western scholar’s research on ethical literary continued to develop in depth.Aseries of representative scholarly works were published.For example,Trevor Creightonpublished Ethics Aesthetics of Modern Poetry in 1884,and Maurice Thompson published TheEthics of Literary Art in 1893,etc.These works address the issue of the relationship betweenreligion,philosophy,and literature in a broader context.The study of ethical literary hasbecome a broad concept.In contrast to the previous study of literature,literature was nolonger a purely literary issue,but was closely linked to disciplines such as ethics andphilosophy,and was clearly influenced by religion.However,on the whole,the study ofethical literary in the West in the 19th century mainly discussed and evaluated literature fromthe perspective of ethics and morality,and did not establish its theoretical system of ethicalliterary.

2.2 The Overview and Development of Ethical Literary Criticism in China
