stern ethical criticism are American critic Wayne Clayson Booth’s The Rhetoric ofFiction.and the translation and publication of Booth’s anthology in China.The Rhetoric of Fiction was first translated and published in China in 1987.This work discussing the ideas ofethical criticism plays a very important role in the development of literary ethical criticism inChina.By the 1990s,the development of new literary critical theory in China could almostkeep pace with the West.In 1997,scholar Cheng Xilin published an interview with Booth,“Contemporary American Literary Theory”,which introduced Booth’s literary theorycentered on ethics and morality in the form of a dialogue,allowing more Chinese scholars torecognize the problem of the relationship between fiction and ethics.In 2001,Cheng Xilinand Wang Xiaolu co-published the book Theories of Contemporary American Fiction.This isthe first monograph in China that systematically studies the theory of the American novel,giving domestic readers a deeper understanding of Western ethical criticism.It plays animportant role in the later development of ethical literary criticism in China.(Cheng Xilin,Wang Xiaolu,2001)
