Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Orientation
A number of studies on teacher talk in EFL teaching have been made by researchers,which to some extent have changed the traditional concept of teachers' roles, and haveprovided a definite guidance to the concrete methods of teacher talk in practice. In spiteof what have been achieved in this field, the present study aims to provide an empiricalresearch on the features of teacher talk by detailed analysis of specific examples fromnatural classes.

1.2 Research Background
Teacher talk is of crucial significance to all classes, especially in the EFL classes,for in which teacher talk is not only the learning objective of the course, but also themedia to achieve the objective. Teacher talk is the language teachers use to organize andmanage the second language and foreign language classrooms and implement theirteaching plans (Nunan, 1991). A great number of scholars have made a lot of empiricalresearch on it. Attentions of these studies have been given to the features of teacher talkfor language input purpose, such as the speed, the pause, the tone, the stress of talkingand the adjusting in vocabulary, syntax and discourse (Chaudron, 1988). Researches onteacher talk began to appear in China since the 1990s. Almost all the studies of teachertalk focus on the traditional classroom most of which are mainly teacher-centered. Theresults from these studies show that teacher talk is closely related to leaner's targetlanguage acquisition process. Whether teacher talk is used appropriately in theclassroom interaction or not can directly result in students' learning effects. Besides, acomprehensive analysis on the characteristics of teacher talk can help us judge orexamine the effectiveness of teaching. Therefore, to carry out the investigation onteacher talk in English classroom through naturalistic inquiry has of crucial importanceto both theory and practice of English learning. So far there have been many academicworks entirely devoted to the analysis of teacher talk but the touch on the relationshipbetween teacher talk and classroom interaction is rare, except for some articlespublished. Besides, there are still questions seldom been touched about the relationshipbetween teachers and students.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 General Understanding of Teacher Talk
According to Sinclair and Brazil (1982), teacher talk (TT for short) means thespeeches that the teacher uses to speak to students when the teacher undertakes the taskin the foreign language teaching. Teacher talk refers to the language of teaching tasks asprescribed in textbooks and the language the teacher uses to perform such teaching tasksas paragraphing words or sentences or illustrating grammar rules. Here, a couple ofexplanations of this definition should be given to readers. First, the definition of teachertalk should not be limited to foreign language teaching only, for there are manyresearches of teacher talk about the teaching of other subjects, such as Mathematics,Science, History, etc. Besides,some researchers may mistakenly understand teacher talkin foreign language teaching as foreigner talk.
