摘要:Verb is one of the main elements of making sentences, which is thought to be mostimportant in learning English grammar. Though students of higher technical and vocationalcolleges have been studying English for over eight years, some of them cannot use Englishcorrectly or communicate successfully with others in English.
1. Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The teaching of grammar, for long, has been regarded as one of the most importantparts for the English teaching, and teachers have always been making repeated attempts toimprove their grammar teaching methods. However, what puzzles us is for teachers how toteach grammar and for students how to keep their interest in learning grammar. For centuries,the dominant activity in class was the sole study of grammar rules. As is known to all, lots ofgrammar teaching approaches have been widely used in the English grammar teaching, suchas grammar-translation approach, cognitive approach, direct approach, etc. And in the pastyears, grammar-translation approach used in China has made a deep impact on Englishgrammar teaching. But recently, due to the promotion of the new curriculum, many teachershave a wrong understanding of grammar teaching, so they tend to ignore the grammarteaching. Most of the higher vocational students, however, while learning English grammar,still meet lots of difficulties, faced by instable grammar knowledge, stumbling obstacles ingrammar rules and less interest in learning English grammar. Frankly speaking, students whowant to learn English grammar well can not find a good method to learn it. So it is quitenecessary for students to master a good English grammar learning strategy.Schema theory is a useful strategy for Chinese students to learn English. The concept“schema” was first proposed by the German psychologist Kant in 1781. In 1932, the Britishpsychologist Fredrick Bartlett using the term schema in his class study of how humanmemory works. In 1967, psychologist Piaget began using schema to explain the developmentof children’s cognition.

1.2 The Significance and Purpose of the Research
Verb is one of the main elements of making sentences, which is thought to be mostimportant in learning English grammar. Though students of higher technical and vocationalcolleges have been studying English for over eight years, some of them cannot use Englishcorrectly or communicate successfully with others in English. One of the reasons is that mostof them have not thorough grammar knowledge and found lots of difficulties in learning andusing it. So a good learning strategy is hoped to change such embarrassing situation forEnglish learners of higher technical and vocational colleges. The author thinks the applicationof schema theory is of more help for both teachers and students.This study intends to solve the following two problems: (1) Can schema theory appliedto higher technical and vocational college English verb grammar teaching enhance students’interest in learning English grammar? (2) Can this schema grammar teaching method moreeffectively improve students’ abilities to master English verbs? The author hopes that theschema theory grammar teaching method can help the students of higher technical andvocational colleges to develop their communicative abilities and increase their English levels.
