A. Interaction with other symbols  
One of the most distinctive characters of color as symbols is the fact that it must interact  with  other  objects.  In  other  words,  there  must  be  an  object  as  a  vehicle  to carry  the  symbol  of  color.  The  interaction  between  colors  and  other  symbols strengthen  the  symbolic  meaning.  The  overlapping  and  interaction  of  the  different symbols in Wide Sargasso Sea will be explained as an example in the following.  The color of red appears many times together with different symbols in the novel. It is the color of fire, which appear as an important symbol several times in the novel. The novel begins and ends both with a big fire. Antoinette’s tragedy begins with the fire,  which   burns  down  her  mother’s  house  at  Coulibri  Estate  and  leads  to  her mother’s madness and her brother’s death. From the very beginning of the novel, the female protagonist’s fate is closely connected with fires. The fire also burns Annette’s bird  dead.  In  the  following  part,  her  future  husband,  the  English  gentleman  makes comments on the moths which burn themselves in the candle’s flames.
