2.2 Evidentiality and Related Concepts
In linguistics, the category of evidentiality is easily confused with other notions.Two of these related concepts are modality and subjectivity. This part firstly deals withthe relationship of evidentiality and modality, and then it comes to the relationshipbetween evidentiality and subjectivity.Modality is a semantic category expressing the speaker’s attitude towards theproposition. Generally speaking, modality is classified into two types, namely,epistemic modality and deontic modality. Epistemic modality involves the resourcesavailable to the speaker to express judgment of fact or signal degrees of knowledge. Inother words, epistemic modality is concerned with the speaker’s attitude towards thestatus of the proposition, i.e. the possibilities of the factuality of the proposition (Saeed,1997). Deontic modality allows the expression of obligation and permission, often interms of morality and law, so it reveals the speaker’s attitude towards some socialfactors, such as obligation, responsibility and permission. This chapter will focus on the data analysis of evidentiality in Chinese andAmerican college students’ English speeches. Quantitative study and qualitative studywill be combined for analysis. This part is based on quantitative analysis because it willmake use of the corpus tool for calculation.
